The Lutheran church recognises three ancient creeds that accurately express the main teaching of the Bible
  • The Apostle’s Creed
  • The Nicene Creed
  • The Athanasian Creed

The Apostles’ Creed

The final wording of the Apostles’ Creed developed over several hundred years. Its exact origins are unknown, but is close in wording to a creed written by Irenaeus, bishop of Lyons, in 180 A.D. The creed expresses the biblical teachings of the apostles, hence “The Apostles’ Creed”, and offers a simple summary of the Christian faith. For that reason, it has a long history of being associated with Baptism and instruction in God’s word.
